CHILD SAFETY SEAT PROGRAM

 Officer Paul Steinfelt and Officer Peter Montgomery are certified child safety seat

 technicians with 32 hours of training.

 Contact them at 717-741-1259 for an appointment.

 Car seats will be installed on weekends only.

 

Watch for installation clinics schedule.  There are none scheduled at this time.

 

According to a study by the York Center for Traffic Safety 95 % of all child seats checked in York County are installed incorrectly.

WHAT IS THE LAW?

 

 - Children under 4 years of age

   are required to use a restraint.

   Nonuse is a primary offense.

 

 - Children 4 to under 8 years

    are required to use a booster

    seat.  Nonuse is a secondary

    offense.  The driver will only

    be cited if there is a moving

    violation, such as running a

    red light.

 

 - Drivers and passengers 8 to

   18 years are required to be

   restrained while traveling in a

   vehicle.

 

INFANTS

TODDLER

UNDER 4'9" AND 80 POUNDS

AGE/WEIGHT

  Birth to 1 year AND at least 20 pounds

  Over 1 year and 20 pounds

  Over 40 pounds.

  Ages 4 to 8 years

  Under height of 4'9" and 80 pounds

TYPE OF SEAT

  Infant-only or rear-facing convertible.

  Forward-facing

  Convertible OR Belt-positioning

   booster with harness to 40 pounds.

  Belt positioning booster seat.

 

CAR SEAT POSITION

 

  Rear-facing only

  Forward-facing.

  Forward-facing.

 

ALWAYS

MAKE SURE:

 

  Harness straps at or below the shoulder

  level.

  Harness straps should be at or above the

   shoulders.

  The booster seat assures that the lap belt

   rides low across the thigh area and the

   shoulder bet fits snug crossing the chest.

WARNING

  Infants should never travel behind an

   airbag.

  All children 12 years and under should

   travel in the back seat.

  Belt positioning booster seats MUST be used

   with lap/shoulder belts.
