- Never give out your Social Security Number
- Memorize your passwords (do not write them down)
- Do not use simple or dictionary words, names, addresses or birth dates for your passwords
- Make sure a web site is secure (the web site address should start with https://) before entering personal information or credit card information
- Always use a credit card for online purchases
- Check your bank and credit cards statements regularly, including any online accounts
- Be aware of web sites and emails that give prizes away
- Use commercially available services and software that offer parental controls
- Tell your children to not give out phone numbers or addesses nor to meet face-to-face with someone that they met online
- Monitor your children’s Internet access
- Report any fraud immediately to your local police department and to your bank or credit card company
