On June 26, 2014 at 2:19 am, York Area Regional Police were called to the scene of a fire at York Township’s Snyder Park located on Locust Rd. in York Township. Units arrived to find the park pavilion and some park furniture completely engulfed in flames. The structure, its contents and some park furniture were completlely destroyed. The invesitgation into the fire originally looked at the possibility of a lightning strike as a possible source of ignition. A review of the weather data of the storms in the area around that time failed to support that therory so the investigation remained open and the cause was officially listed as “undetermined”.
On July 9, 2014 while investigating an unrelated suspicious vehicle/drug arrest, information was uncovered by York Area Regional Police that the pavilion fire was set by some juveniles in the area that evening. Officers continued to investigate and interview several individuals and subsequently charged one of the juveniles with; Arson, Criminal Mischief, Institutional Vandalism and Criminal Trespass. Two other juveniles were also present the night of the fire but were not charged in the incident.
